About the vessel
Inland vessel for general and bulk cargo, type Freycinet-Peniche/Spits, Dutch (usually German speaking) ship command, approx. 360 tons dead-weight, length 39 m, breadth 5 m. This type of ship is exactly tailored to the size of the class I locks and bridges on inland waterways, which are often found in France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany

Guest cabin in the foreship, usually with toilet and wash basin, access via a ladder or narrow stairs, seating

A trip on these small, lovingly maintained ships is really something special.
The crew usually consists of just the two bargemen and the ship’s dog.
In earlier times, these ships were the backbone of the supply of building materials, coal, wine, etc.
Every pleasure boater in France knows the feeling of suddenly coming across such a “monster” on a small canal.
3 meals and coffee or tea are included in the price.
Space is limited on these small inland vessels, life usually takes place in the wheelhouse and outside, mutual respect and consideration are required.
There are bicycles on board for guests; you can bring your own bike free of charge.
To arrange a ride, you need a travel period of 1 calendar month, boarding is at short notice.
Shore leave
Depending on the cargo, longer unloading and loading times may occur. Shore leave is almost always possible, for example in locks. The trips are well suited for accompanying vessels by bicycle or on foot.

We’re back and it was a fantastic trip.
Contrary to the original plan – after I’d first been in touch with the ship’s owner – we didn’t actually board in Antwerp until Tuesday (rather than on Saturday). From there, we travelled to Rotterdam, Moerdijk, Duisburg, Mannheim and back.

Sorry for only getting in touch now. The trip on the cargo ship was lovely. We arrived at Eurogate at 7 am on 28 October and then back at CTT at around 10 am. We stayed in Hamburg for one more night after that. On the 16th, we boarded at around 4 pm and cast off the next day at 1.30 pm.
