Anyone who has ever fancied a trip on a cargo ship will find this travelogue offers a little taste of what might lie in store

Lonely walks beneath towers of containers, fascinating views from the bridge, boisterous karaoke nights with the crew, tight docking manoeuvres in foreign ports, eccentric pilots, shore leave with that special something and, last but not least, the impressive two-time crossing of the Panama Canal. Whatever I’d expected in the run-up to this cargo ship voyage, the reality simply surpassed everything. Eight weeks on a container ship is a long time. For those who don’t have – or don’t want to invest – that much time, but still wouldn’t want to miss out on these experiences, this travelogue could be an alternative. Though only the second-best……!
